Volunteering at the local Arts Council

Friday, August 12th, 2011

I’ve begun volunteering with the Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council in Marysville, CA as an Art Gallery Administrator/Docent. I understand “administrator” and “docent” are not interchangeable, but those are the titles I’ve been using when meeting new people. I’ve been very busy with my volunteer position, and I’ve devoted roughly eighteen hours a week to the arts council. It feels good to be back inside of a non-profit organization that is promoting the arts and culture, and honestly, I feel like I am giving back to the community. I’m also garnering a lot of experience, and I’ve developed a very good relationship with Kathleen, the executive director.

I would say the task I enjoy most at the moment is designing graphics and flyers for programming. Sometimes I don’t know why I didn’t become a Graphic Design major in school. But no regrets here, I promise! Another potential endeavor: selling artwork through Etsy. I’m hesitant to do it, but I keep mulling it around in my head, and it seems like a good idea if only to increase my income and ego.

All-in-all, a LOT of stuff happening over the last few months, and a steady promise of more things to come.

The Graduate

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Commencement was a comforting success, and the move back to California was exhausting and wonderful. I’m currently on the lookout for museum-related jobs in San Francisco (cough cough, hint hint), and I’ve applied to a few. My goal is to find a job and move to the area within the year, and I’m pretty positive about the future. I’ve been slowly planning my wedding, and we’ve just recently nailed down all the important factors: location, wedding officiant, and food. I’m currently in the process of creating save-the-date and invitation designs, and I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll be adding a “projects” section to my website soon, which will showcase the various events, designs and sites I’ve created for exhibitions and curatorial practices. For now, I’ll leave you with a couple of iPhone photos my mother captured of my show:

Getting ready for my Commencement Show

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Studio, November 2010

It’s been a very busy past few weeks! I’ve been working on my Senior Thesis for the past year, and I’ll finally be graduating at the end of this week. My body of work has been kind of all over the place, and about three weeks ago I decided to scrap most of my finalized drawings that I had planned to put in my Commencement Show. I’ve since then been working on five new drawings, and/or tweaking past drawings to fit into my vision of what I want.

In the meantime, the rest of my life seems to have been put on hold. My apartment has not been cleaned in more than a month. I can’t remember the last time I did laundry. Showers are infrequent, and I’m just glad I can remember what day of the week it is so I don’t miss going to my 2 part-time jobs. Also, I’ve decided that sharing in-progress work with loved ones, e.g., my fiance, is not the best thing to do. Especially if I’m already stressed out about a show, a move back to Yuba City, California, and finding a job within the upcoming months in order to do a final move to San Francisco. Musings of, “Oh GOD, my work isn’t good enough! HE HATES MY WORK SO HE HATES ME!” are not conducive to productivity, and really just underline the fact that I am hyperbolic.

But, all in all, with just 5 days before the opening of my commencement show and graduation, I am finally getting back to normal.

Business

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

I just sent my files to moo.com to get my business cards printed. I probably spent a little too much time on this, especially since I haven’t finished my postcard yet. But it was fun!

EDIT: I would NOT recommend moo.com for your printing needs. PsPrint.com is the way to go.

Work, work, work

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Wow, hey, I’ve updated my site quite a bit. I’ve added a picture of my face to my “about” section, and if you’re paying attention to my online presence, you’ll notice this is the photo I use for EVERYTHING. I’d say it’s about time I get a new photo of myself to disperse online. I was going to be really cute, and upload a photo of myself in my studio. Since my face was obscured, and I was wearing only my underwear/pajamas, I decided against it. Besides, it would’ve given away the fact that I’ve been keeping torn out images from a past Anthropologie magazine on my walls as reference photos for horses. No good. That stuff has to be kept secret, you know? I’ve just GOT to appear as original as possible.

First post

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Alright, I am finally updating my website. First things first: new logo. I had this other logo that was a little random, and not really me. So I decided to change it to a teardrop-shaped boob. Much better.

Much more activity to follow. I promise. I’ll be adding my resume, more images of my work, and more blog entries. I’d like to get into the habit of using my blog on here as a keeper of my thoughts and ideas. Unfortunately, I have had a hard time allowing my life as an artist interact with my personal, social and professional life. I’m hoping this new pink-boob logo will allow me to be more of myself within my website and elsewhere on the web.
